If you are a Maya PLE user and you patched UT2003 to 2136 (and you should have) then you will need this updated version of the plug-in to export your meshes to UnrealEd.

Download and unzip to your PLE's bin\plug-ins folder and overwrite the original unEditor.mll.

 UnrealED Win98 Fix (23:16) Updated by [ Wolf ]

If you are running (or trying to run) UnrealED 3.0 under Windows 98 then go here and get the fix from the Unreal Technology Page. Just unzip the two files into your \UT2003\system folder. Remember kids: This is for Unreal Tournament 2003 and no other games.

 UT2003 Editor Patch (22:13) Updated by [ Wolf ]

There is a patch already out for UnrealEd 3.0 that ships with UT2003. Here is the skinny from the Epic Unreal. Tech Page:
If you are using the Unreal Editor, unzip this file into your UT2003\system directory, to fix a crash when rebuilding AI paths: Editor Update (1.26 MB)
There is also a problem running the editor on Windows 98. We should have a fix for this problem posted shortly.
We are also going to be making the Unreal Development Environment, a powerful script programming IDE, available very soon.

As a side note, this is the first patch I have ever downloaded before I even had the game! :)

Unreal Tournament 2003 Gold! (8:46) Updated by [ Wolf ]

Yeah, you read it right. UT2003 went gold this morning. Here is the Announcement by Mark Rein on the Infogrames Forums. The game ships with some really cool editing tools:

    1. Maya Personal Learning Edition from Alias|Wavefront - a special version of the professional-strength 3D content creation tool used by top game designers and major Hollywood studios along with a special plug-in created by our friends Secret Level Inc. that provides seamless integration between the game's engine and Maya.

    2. The Karma Authoring Tool (KAT) that allows you to set up character joint constraints for use with MathEngine's Karma real-time physics system which is incorporated into UT2003.

    3. UPaint - a 3D painting application that lets you paint directly on the games' characters in 3D and also provides face projection which allows you to paste your face over the game's characters.

    4. The Unreal Editor 3.0 - the latest version of the main tool we used to build all of the UT2003 levels.

    5. The UnrealScript Real Time Debugger lets mod authors trace through their code like never before. This is the kind of tool that professional developers rely on to ship the best possible code.

    6. A fully working Karma-enhanced vehicle and a test level to drive it around it. This will give mod maker a head start on how to do cool vehicle-based mods with our technology.

I know you are drooling on your keyboard, but it will only be a matter of a few days till the 3 CD game is in your grubby little hands :)

Congradulations to Digital Extremes and Epic!

Status Report (2:41) Updated by [ Wolf ]

Wow...someone *IS* Reading this! :) Right now I am mentally preparing to overhaul this site when UT2003 ships. Not sure exactly what I am going to do with it yet, as all the GOOD info on editing for the Unreal engine will be somewhere else, which I will link to when the time comes, but I can "fill in the gaps" with some info here that is more game specific. Also, as you may or may not know, a TON of games will be hitting the shelves this year and early next year using the Unreal Engine. If I cover any editing aspects of those games it will be based on what kind of requests I get. If I don't get any requests for (insert future game name here) then I won't post anything on it, except maybe a link. So if you are foaming at the mouth to learn more about editing (insert future game name here) drop me a line. The squeakiest wheels will get greased first :)

 Status (15:21) Updated by [ Wolf ]

I know, I haven't updated (or even finished the last update!) in a while. I'm not really a lazy SOB, I've just been really busy with other things that unfortunately take priority over this site. As time permits I will finish up unfinished things and then move on to new content. This site isn't dead it's just...sleepy :)

ASE to T3D Converter (11:09) Updated by [ Wolf ]

If you use 3DSMAX and always wanted to export a mesh to import as geopemtry in UnrealED and keep the texture coordiants in tact, then this is what you want. This converter will take an ASE you export from MAX and turn it into a .T3D (retianing texture info, etc..) ready for import to your level. Sweet huh? Thanks to my pal Spooger. You can only get the converter at this site:

Future of Site Part 2 (17:25) Updated by [ Wolf ]

It appears that Rust has been in contact with someone at Telefragged and, for now anyway, this site is safe....

The Future (10:43) Updated by [ Wolf ]

Well, well....it seems that Telefragged might be going to shut down Rust (GameDesign.net) and so it's hosted sites, mine included. This sucks since I have spent years telling people about Unreal.GameDesign.Net and getting everyone to use my wolf@gamedesign.net e-mail address. Jherax is trying to get the domain name and find a host server, and if he does Rust will at least live on...but the future of hosted sites is in question. Just goes to show you that nothing is permanent. Anyway, for those who need to contact me if and when this sight goes down, you can use my thewolf@kc.rr.com e-mail. I will keep people posted somehow about where I end up.

RunEd Modeling Tutorial (2:19) Updated by [ Wolf ]

RunEd has just posted the first of a three-part series on 3D modeling in 3D Studio Max. This tutorial was originally written by Allen McKay and was revised and modified with permission by Kenneth "Maxcraxx" Rodda. It's very thorough and has screenshots and easy to follow instructions. It covers the basic of model construction and the next two parts will cover UVW maps for skinning the model and then weighing and importing your model into Rune. Here's the direct link to the tutorial.

 Linkages (9:43) Updated by [ Wolf ]

Speaking of links.....if I had told you recently that I would put a link to your site and have not, I am sorry. Please send the link info again and I will get it up on the redesign of the links page. I just moved last weekend and I lost (or misplaced) my list of links for the update. Thanks again.

Fixed Links (7:53) Updated by [ Wolf ]

Umm...what do you think? (2:06) Updated by [ Wolf ]

Hey, I know ...I haven't updated in forever, I haven't published any new tutorials like I said I would...etc...ther, I jumped my own shit so you don't have to :) But seriously, that old RealLife bug has bitten me hard and I haven't had time for anything lately. But, I have played a few recent games using the Unreal Engine and I liked them. I was thinking, when I finally get around to updating this site again (yes, new content including tutorials-links-and other goodies [maybe even a map or two!]) that I might include sections specific to editing other Unreal Engine games...I thought I would let you all decide. If I get enough response for any Unreal Engine game I will post something for that game. I was going to do a poll on this, but I am too lazy (or maybe it's another time thing) :) Anyway, let me know what you think about content specific to other Unreal Engine games. PS: sorry I haven't been to the forum lately...see above ...I will get back there soon and annoy everyone I am sure :) Later, Wolf

Chilli has Sugar Puffs for breakfast today! (8:05) Updated by [ Wolf ]

Actually...there is a new version with a new interface and it looks fantastic. Here is what Chilli had to say:

Bad Chilli!! The recent release of ChilliSkinner v2.8.6 had a serious bug in it that caused big problems. :(
Good Chilli!! New release ChilliSkinner v3.0.0 just posted up at http://www.chilliweb.co.uk/chilliskinner
v3.0.0 is more than a couple of bug fixes... it has a completely new Graphical User Interface, MAX 4 support, Undo/Redo support and many other code optimisations. Take a look at the new interface http://www.chilliweb.co.uk/chilliskinner/helpcsv3.htm Please accept my humble apologies for the bug that went out in the last release I hope that if your only experience of ChilliSkinner was that flawed version then you'll give it another chance and try this new version.
-Chilli

Tutorial Stuff (11:20) Updated by [ Wolf ]

Not mine.,..yet.....but in the meantime you can find some good tutorials on UED 2.0 (and other stuff) at this site:The Indian Fakir's UnrealEd Guide . The site is kind of funky and some of the info is hard to read because of the color scheme, but there is a lot of good info there.

3DDownloads.com has a couple different mirrors so if one doesn't work, try another. Sorry for the inconvience and I will try to get my links fixed as soon as I can.

Update? Here? Really? (11:49) Updated by [ Wolf ]

Well, kind of :)

As many of you "regulars" know, I have been "away" from the Unreal Editing community for some time now ( a LOT longer than I intended!).

A couple times over the last couple months I have posted here that I have some projects, updates, etc... in the works and that they would be finished soon. Unfortunately I have not had any time to devote to these endeavors lately. I have not quit, or left or anything like that, and I will be updating-revamping-adding new content, but I can't say when.

To all those who may have e-mailed me in the last couple months, I am sorry I have not gotten back with you yet. If you have editing questions please try the gamedesign.net forum (link is to the left) as there are some great people that frequent that forum and do a fine job of answering people's questions (both newbie and advanced questions). I will still answer editing questions via e-mail but I can't promise replies and I can't say the answers will always be prompt.

The reality is that I have been very busy with things outside of Unreal engine editing and since this site is basically a "hobby" it has to take the backseat to more lucrative endeavors. As I said, I am not stopping, this site will go on and eventually will be back to more regular updates, etc...but I can't promise how quickly this will occur.

In the meantime, I am building an outline site where I am playing with site designs and contents for the upcoming massive update. This is where you can help. Here is my "plan" for content in the near future:

My Maps:
My works will always be featured at this site.

Tutorials:
Unreal/UT tutorials for both the original UnrealEd and version 2.0 Tutorials or information (at worst links) for other Unreal Engine games (Deus Ex, Rune, et. al...)

Utilities:
A download section for some of the best utilities for use in Unreal Engine editing.

Any and all suggestions for new content at this site should be sent to me, Wolf
Thanks for your support. -Wolf

Duke To Use UnrealEd 2.0 (6:39) Updated by [ Wolf ]

Got word from GameSpy that 3D Realms' George Broussard let it slip in their Forums that Duke Nukem Forever was making the switch to UnrealEd 2.0. Here's a quote:

Brandon has been working on a little project the last couple of days that will be of interest to mod authors.

DNF will support UnrealEd 2 as it's primary editor. We plan to make the switch in a couple of days and Brandon already has UE2 loading DNF maps.

UE2 is in C++ and not basic, so it's more stable and a little faster. We also no longer have to distribute clunky/confusing Visual Basic runtime libraries.

It will also be much easier to add new features to UE2 as it is better written and in the natural language of the game (ie not Basic).
