Sniper's Paradise!

Running a Non-Dedicated Unreal server on a local LAN (local area network / intranet)
(This assumes you already have a LAN setup, if not see the Setting Up a LAN)

This is the easy part!!! You don't have to deal with the Internet, port forwarding, third party software. It's just You, Unreal and Your LAN...

Starting The Unreal Server!

At this point, the Server communicates with it's clients in TCP/IP.

Non-Dedicated (Multiplayer) Server.

We are going to launch a non-dedicated server from one of the Client computers on the LAN, the one that doesn't have the extra Network Interface Card connected to the Internet. We are not connecting to the Internet for this step, we will be running a LAN only Server.

Click on options | preferences | network | select "LAN"

Note The above line with spaces and bars will be used to show steps in a selection (drop down) menu

<

"Max Team Score" set the game score for ending the TeamGame here.

"Weapons Stay" check this box for the weapon to remain in the map when you pick it up, making it available for the next player to be able to pick it up immediately. If you uncheck the box, then after you pick up the weapon, it will disappear from the map for a set amount of time, leaving the next player without that weapon available to them while cussing because they need a weapon hehe.

"Max Connections" set the maximum number of player you want to allow in the game.

"Force Team Balance" check this box for the game engine to balance the teams as players come into the game, it bases the decision on the number of players on each team at that moment of entry.

"Force Respawn" if you check this box then when you are killed you will immediately respawn (re-enter the game) with no time to catch your breathe, think about what is happening or get a drink. If you walk away from the computer with your player still in the game, it will keep respawning and getting killed, causing your teammates to get really annoyed at you :( if you did this on someone else's server and they saw what was happening, they would most likely "KICK" you from the server.

"Friendly Fire percentage" this sliding scale lets you adjust how much "pain and damage" you cause your teammate when you "accidentally" shoot them. Most servers run it at 0%.

"Time Limit" set this in minutes, for how long you want the game to run before it shuts down the level if the score has not been reached.

<"Tournament" for normal server running do not check this box. If you check this box then the game will not start until all the player are in and you will not be able to change teams during the Tournament Matches.

"Max Spectators" this sets the number of people who can enter the game as a spectator. Spectators pull down the same amount of bandwidth and CPU usage and memory allocation as a player. So be careful how many you let watch.

"Max Teams" This sets the maximum number of teams that will be allowed in the game. If you have it set for 2, the default will be BLUE and RED, if you try to join the GREEN team it will not allow it to happen.

"Game Style" the normal setting is Hardcore. There is a drop down menu with other settings, none of which I have tried ( no time..hehe ) but feel free to experiment with them.

"Game Speed" again the "sliding scale" will set the game to run faster or slower depending on the setting.

"Air Control" how much you can affect the direction of your movement while in the air.

"Translocator" if you check this, then the use of the Translocator will be allowed on the server. It is a wrist worn device (beacon) that you "shoot" over to a location by pressing "fire" button, if you press the "fire" button again you will be transported over to the spot where the Translocator beacon is.

"Base Skill" this sets the "killing" skills of the BOTs making them easy targets or feared opponents who will beat you into the ground :)

"Min. Total Players " this is the minimum numberof player (Human and BOTS) that will be maintained in the game. If the Human Player count drops below this then the BOTS will come in to keep the number at the minimum. As Human players enter the game, the BOTS will leave. If the Human player count goes to this number then there will be "NO" BOTS.

"Auto Adjust Skill" if you check this box then as you are playing the game with BOTS in it, they will "learn" how to play better as the game progresses.

"Balance Teams" if you check this box then the BOTS will move back and forth between teams as needed to keep them balanced based on the number of players on each team.

"Configure" Button if you click on this it will open a new screen showing the BOTS and their individual settings.

"Random Order" if you check this box then which BOTS enter the game will be chosen randomly. If you uncheck it then they will appear in the order that they are listed in your "Configure" screens.

"Server Name" enter the name of your server.

"Admin Name" your admin name.

<"Admin E-mail" if you wish to be contacted about your server, if you should launch it on the Internet, however for LAN it is useless.

"MOTD Line 1 thru 4" Message of the Day fields.

"Advertise Server" uncheck this box for LAN only play, this is to add your server to the Internet game browsers.

"ngWorldStats Logging" uncheck this box, it is for Internet Servers only.

"Optimize for LAN" check this box to ensure better game play after all this is what LAN is all about :). It sets your maxClientrate and maxtickrates to higher values as the LAN will handle those settings better than your Internet connection will.

Now Click on the "Start Button" to launch a non-dedicated server. This will allow you to play in the LAN game from the same machine and in the same game that is running the Unreal Server.

Connecting the next PC!!!

Put your mouse pointer on the Highlighted Server Name...Double left click on it to join or single right click on it for a drop down menu with options for info and joining the game. (Choose Play on this server)
