Setting up a Server
- Step 1: Start unreal up.
- Step 2: Press "Esc" button to begin. For Unreal only, Gold users go to step 5 to get to advanced options.
- Step 3: Arrow down to "Options" and hit enter.
- Step 4: Arrow down to "Advanced Options", it is the last item on the list.
- Step 5: Gold user need to type "preferences" at the command prompt. To get to the command prompt use the "tilde" key, it is found above the "tab" key
- Step 6: You should now be looking at a new window titled "Advanced options".
- Step 7: Next line down is "MasterServerAddress"
- Step 8: Left click on "Public Server Information", Next to ServerName type in the server name you want to show on the Gamespy server List, Next to ShortName you can enter an abbreviated title or reference name.
- Step 9: You now need to decide which maps you want to run on your server. Left click on Map Lists it is located just above Master Server Uplink. Left click on Deathmatch Maps. Then left click on Maps next to each number on the list you will see the maps that will be playing. Here you can type in or edit the name of the maps that you want run on your server. Make sure the name is exactly the same as it appears in your Unreal/Maps directory.
- Step 10: Now go back up the menu and find "Game Types", left click on it. Now left click on Deathmatch.
- Step11: Now go back up one line above "Game Types" and left click on "Game Settings". Go down to Maxplayers and enter the number of players you want in the game. Next Enter the number of spectators you want to allow in the game next to MaxSpectators. See Run A Server for setting up the number of players on your server.
- Step12: You are done with "Advanced Options" menu and need to close out by clicking on the "X" box in the upper right hand corner, you will return to Unreal screen. If you don't see the screen look for Unreal minimized bar on your computer and maximize it.
- Step13: You should be looking at the "Options Menu" on your screen, press "ESC", and then arrow up one line to "Multiplayer" and press "Enter"
- Step14: Arrow down to "Start Game" and press "Enter" May take a few seconds be patient.
- Step15: You should be looking at "Multiplayer" Screen, Top line Select Game use right and left arrows to pick game type, like DeathMatch or TeamPlay.
- Step16: Arrow down to Select Map, use left and right arrows to pick a map should be on your Map List you put under Advanced Options, this map you choose will be the first one to play.
- Step17: If you have only one computer and you want to play in the game Arrow down to "Start Game" and press "Enter" next screen choose your name and skin and press "Start Game".
- Step18: You should now be playing Unreal online. Press "F12" to minimize your screen and now start Gamespy Lite, Hit refresh and look for your server name on the server list. If you see it you are now a server. Maximize your Unreal screen and start playing.
Using your mouse left click on "Networking", now left click on "Master Server Uplink"
You will then see "DoUplink" the default should be False right now, so left click on False
and an arrow will appear in that box,left click on the arrow and choose "TRUE"
In the blank area to the right type in: unreal.gamespy.com
Do not change any other settings in that menu.
Optional: You can enter your E-mail address next to AdminEmail if you want people to contact you about your server, and enter your contact name next to AdminName.
Note: If you leave a blank space on the Map List between Maps the server will not jump the blank space when reading the list.
Go to FragLimit and enter the number of frags/ kills you want the game to end at.
Go to TimeLimit and enter the number of minutes you want the game to end at.
Now go to Team Play to set the number of teams and Players next to MaxTeams and MaxTeamSize.
Alternate step: If you have two computers or you don't want to play in the game you can choose Launch A Dedicated Server. Unreal will disappear from your screen and you will be looking at your windows desktop screen. On your task bar you will see an Unreal Icon, once it has finished "starting" you can right click on it and choose Console, a window will open showing you what unreal is doing and who is downloading or entering the game.
That is it for the basics. There is more you can do later, like add skin packages and mod, etc. but they aren't covered here.
