Where can I find the latest version of UnrealEd?
UnrealEd was included with the original retail releases of both Unreal and Unreal Tournament. It was not included with OEM versions, such as those distributed with the Voodoo series of cards. Other Unreal engine games also came with their own version of the editor, including Legend's Wheel of Time (WoTEd) and the long-forgotten Klingon Honor Guard. Both editors for those games should be included on the installation CDs.
Unreal owners should download the UnrealEdFix4.exe program. This is a standalone installer that includes the latest publically available updates. Important: Be sure to install UnrealEd into your Unreal directory, otherwise it will not work. The default path is C:\Unreal.
Unreal Tournament owners have the same exact program available on the second CD. In the UnrealEd folder, there is a file called UnrealEdInstaller.exe. This is a standalone installer that includes the latest publically available updates. Important: Be sure to install UnrealEd into your Unreal Tournament directory, otherwise it will not work. The default path is C:\Unreal and will most likely need to be changed.
UnrealEd crashes when I try to open it; how can I fix it?
UnrealEd is not quite known for its stability. This is partially due to it's use of Visual Basic for the interface, and partially to its beta status. Other errors arise from improperly completed installations (which are common since the UnrealEd installers are not terribly well documented). Until those conditions change, here are some steps owners of Unreal, Unreal Tournament, and possibly, Klingon Honor Guard (Wheel of Time editors should see the next question for a fix) can take to fix UnrealEd :
- Most of the problems encountered can be fixed by properly (re)installing UnrealEd using one of the installer files: UnrealEdFix4.exe or UnrealEdInstaller. These are the same exact files, but UnrealEdInstaller is conveniently included in the UnrealEd folder of Unreal Tournament CD2. These files are actually standalone UnrealEd installers which will install all the files and necessary components to the correct folders.
Double-click whichever file is available to begin the installation. At the Setup screen, be sure to Change Directory if necessary. This is very important as the default directory will not work for Unreal Tournament or those who installed Unreal in a directory other than C:/Unreal. If you did the default install of Unreal Tournament, you After verifying the correct installation directory, press the computer button to install UnrealEd. Once the installation is complete, reboot your computer and you should be ready to use UnrealEd.
To load UnrealEd, go to your Unreal or Unreal Tournament System folder. You can double-click UnrealEd.exe to start editing, or better yet, make a shortcut or Start menu item. You can make a shortcut by right-clicking on the file and dragging it to where you'd like to make a shortcut. When you let go of the right-mouse button, select Create Shortcut(s) Here. To make a Start menu entry, just drag and drop UnrealEd.exe onto the Start menu button. - If you are receiving the error message Can't find 'ini:Engine.Engine.EditorEngine' in configuration file History: UObject:SafeloadError <- UObject:StaticLoadClass <- Init:Engine when trying to load up UnrealEd for Unreal Tournament, open up your Unreal Tournament System folder and find a file there called unreal.ini. Delete unreal.ini and you should be ready to begin editing.
- If your error message mentions something about sound, you may have some sort of conflict with your sound card's drivers. If you are running the latest version of your sound card's drivers, you can disable sound altogether in UnrealEd. To do this, you can add the -no sound parameter to your UnrealEd command. If you are using a shortcut or Start menu item, right-click on the UnrealEd shortcut and select Properties. In the Target: section, add " -nosound" to the end of the command (after the .exe. For example, if it is C:\Unreal\System\UnrealEd.exe it should read C:\Unreal\System\UnrealEd.exe -nosound. Note that there is a space before the dash and not after.
- If UnrealEd still refuses to run, we have had reports that virtual keyboard software sometimes confuses UnrealEd. The most common offender is the Microsoft Sidewinder Profile software, commonly bundled with their joysticks. You should disable any software that potentially interferes with your keyboard. To disable the Sidewinder software, right-click on the icon in the system tray (by the clock) and select Unload.
I can't find the help file, where is it?
Unfortunately, the reason UnrealEd can't find the help file is because there is none! Because UnrealEd is still technically a beta product and therefore unfinished, no help file was included to explain most of the features. There are however several unofficial help files out there:
- UnrealedReference - A collection of essential reference materials from ekoSonic. This is a good place for beginner's to start.
How can I run UnrealEd on my Mac/Linux box?
UnrealEd is a PC-only application for now, and it appears that it will remain that way. Some success has been reported by a few people who have gotten UnrealEd to run on their Macintosh by using Virtual PC. According to those sources, mouse control is very difficult if not impossible to deal with. Unfortunately that's the best information we have, so your best bet may be to try searching on Deja.com for more information. Here is a search for Mac on alt.games.unreal.ed to get you started.
OldUnreal's 227 Patch allows UED2 to run on wine and 227f's version does support OpenGL for the viewports, so it should be possible to run UED2 completely. Reports are showing that there is still a problem with selecting, so you can see anything, but not work in it yet. No solution is found so far.
