Left.jpg (1269 bytes) UT Demo Version 338 - Known Bugs and Issues

Reporting Bugs

Please check if your issue is noted or addressed below, before submitting bug reports to utbugs@epicgames.com.   If the bug is about a crash or "Critical Error" message, please attach your c:\tournamentdemo\system\unrealtournament.log file generated immediately after the crash occured.  Do not re-launch the game until you've sent the crash log, or it will be overwritten.

Issues with the Full Demo - Version 338

Direct3D

  • You need DirectX7 to use Direct3D.  Get it on Microsoft's Download Page.
  • Some users of Windows 98 + Sound Blaster live cards + NVidia video cards are finding the demo locks up on exit, sometimes with the music looping.  Restarting the computer or killing the TournamentDemo.exe application gets you free.  Try switching to a windowed mode with ALT-Enter before closing the game down.
  • In 16-bit color, weapons may interpenetrate walls when you get real close.
  • If you have any problems, make sure you have the latest Direct3D drivers for your card.
  • I've had a report of very ugly up fonts in the game on a TNT, looking like this.  The solution is to go to your D3D options inside the TNT display control panel, and change the value of the "Texel Alignment".    A value of 3 apparently fixes it, although you should try other values if you're having similar texture weirdness.
  • Running the DirectX 7 debug or development drivers apparently causes servere problems.   Please use the release version of DX7
  • If you have weird flickering on wall surfaces, try turning off Detail Textures in the video options menu.
  • We've seen very poor performance on TNTs in systems with only 64MB RAM.  The Direct3D driver appears to be using a lot of memory and is causing the game to continously swap.  We are working on a solution to this.  Please keep an eye on the Tech Page for updates.
  • TNT1 users should NOT USE high texture detail settings.  You will definitely run out of texture memory and the game will perform very badly.
  • TNT users will get reduced stuttering if they switch to 16 bit color because it halfs texture memory usage.
  • 3dfx users should not use Direct3D - you'll get better performance with Glide.
  • Users of S3 Savage 4 chipset cards should try using the S3 MeTaL driver specific to their card.  This driver was accidently left out of the patch which upgrades the 3dfx demo version - you'll have to use the full 55MB download.  Sorry!

OpenGL

  • Direct3D should always be faster for TNT1 and TNT2 users.  But we have had reports from users that it runs better than D3D, so if you are unhappy with your D3D performance, it's definitely worth giving a go.
  • This driver was accidently left out of the patch which upgrades the 3dfx demo version - you'll have to use the full 55MB download if you want to try OpenGL.  Sorry!
  • There is a precaching crash in the OpenGL driver.  We hope to release a new DLL which will fix this.

Networking

  • Occasionally when the server switches levels, users with high-ping connections may see the "Connecting..." screen appear twice, and reconnect to the server twice.
  • When picking up a weapon, sometimes the animations flicker.
  • In 3dfx Glide, if you alt-tab away from Unreal while connected to a server, you will time out and be disconnected. If running a listen server, all other clients will time out.
  • We have many reports that internet gameplay performance sucks with all games for users with WebTV installed (particularly the version bundled with the Voodoo3 3500). Uninstall it.
  • People have noticed that the server browser now flashes the screenshot and the server title every 5 seconds.  This is the server being repinged every 5 seconds.  The 3dfx version did this as well but it did not cause flicker.   It only does this while browser is visible.  It is NOT repinging servers once the browser is no longer visible.
  • Dedicated servers are using more CPU time than the 3dfx version.  This is currently being addressed.
  • On some machines - usually with a Voodoo Banshee, non-dedicated servers will return to the desktop at the end of the game, when the server attempts to process and upload the ngWorldStats for the game.  The only solution at the moment is to turn off ngStats for the server, from the Stats menu.
  • The remote server admin will crash your server with the error "failed to find object 'Class Any.None" if you attempt to admin a server running the "Entry" level.   Entry is a special level which is loaded when no other map is loaded.  Be sure to start your ucc server command line with a map filename as outlined here, and you won't have any problems.

Audio

  • A3D support is back. For A3D support to work properly, you need the latest drivers from Aureal.
  • EAX support is back.
  • A3D adds a LOT of overhead to the sound occusion calculations.  We recommend you turn off 3D sound because of this, as many users have experienced extreme framerate stuttering. We are looking into this.  You can disable it in Advanced Options.

Cosmetic

  • Ping doesn't always align right in the scoreboard.
  • Ping doesn't show up in scoreboard if resolution X size is less than 640.
  • The ping and the flag icon overlap in the CTF scoreboard.

Linux Server

  • It is recommended that you do not run your Linux server as the root user.
  • If you run it as a non-root user you'll need to change the remote-admin webserver's ListenPort to a value greater than 1024 in your UnrealTournament.ini file.  For example, set ListenPort=8000 in the [UWeb.Webserver] section of the ini file.  You can then access remote admin with the URL http://locahost:8000/ServerAdmin
  • You must be using glibc.  If you're using libc5, you'll need to upgrade - see this link.
  • There is currently no ngWorldStat for Linux.  Please don't try to enable it.
  • Make sure your LinuxThreads is up to date.

Patch to Upgrade 3dfx Version

  • Due to an oversight, the patch does not add the OpenGL or S3 Metal rendering drivers.   If you have patched the 3dfx demo and really want to try these drivers, you will need to download the full 55MB demo.  You are still best off using Glide for your 3dfx card, or Direct3D for all other cards except S3s.

Issues with the 3dfx Demo - Version 322

Many of the bugs in the 3dfx demo have been fixed for the full demo (Version 338).   Please upgrade by visiting the UnrealTournament.com and downloading the 10MB patch.

Here is a list of changes we've made since the 3dfx demo was released.  Please read this file and ensure your issue has not already been addressed before submitting bug reports to utbugs@epicgames.com.
