YOSEMITE ENTERTAINMENT ADDS
EPIC MEGAGAMES UNREAL
TO ARSENAL OF DEVELOPMENT TOOLS
Navy SEALs First Sierra FX Title Using Unreal Engine
(Oakhurst, CA, November 13, 1998) Yosemite
Entertainment announced today that it will use the Unreal engine in upcoming 3D titles,
beginning with the recently announced Navy SEALS tactical simulation game based on the
exploits of former SEAL Richard Marcinko, author of the Rogue Warrior series of
bestselling books. Craig Alexander, General Manager, made the announcement jointly with
Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic MegaGames. Terms of the license were not disclosed.
Navy SEALs will be a squad-based 3D
tactical simulation, not merely a first-person shooter game as have been many titles using
Unreal. will allow the player to take on the role of team commander, and in so doing have
a wide range of realistic combat experiences that a member of the elite fighting group
might face in the line of duty. Choosing the team, equipping each member, selecting gear
appropriate to each mission, and issuing strategically sound orders all become crucial
aspects of gameplay, over and above merely the ability to "point and shoot,"
Alexander pointed out.
The Oakhurst, California-based design
studio, whose titles are released under the Sierra FX brand, is a division of computer
gaming pioneer Sierra On-Line®, Inc., which has long been recognized as a leading
developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software. Choosing to utilize Unreal
in the new realtime 3D Navy SEALs title is illustrative of the companys continuing
commitment to making the best available technologies part of the game development process.
"All of us in the industry have been
intensely interested in the potential of the Unreal engine," said Alexander in making
the announcement. "But we are taking more than a wait and see position.
We are moving ahead. Adding this new tool to Yosemite Entertainments arsenal of game
design technologies further cements Sierras leadership position, and allows us to
keep bringing the best to our customers."
Said Rein of the relationship with Yosemite
Entertainment, "We knew from the start that the developers at Yosemite Entertainment
really got it, in terms of how the Unreal engine makes great games even
better, whether they be squad-based tactical sims such as Navy SEALs will be, or
first-person shooters. The Navy SEALs title is obviously going to be a superior game, so
its extremely gratifying to us to be a part of the team thats bringing it to
life. We know that Sierra took a long, hard look at all the various technologies out
there, and we are nothing less than thrilled that they chose to utilize Unreal," Rein
concluded.
Navy SEALs, due for release in mid-2000,
was first announced in May at the Computer Game Developers Conference (CGDC) in Long
Beach, California.
