ION STORM LICENSES UNREAL ENGINE
First ION Storm Game to Use Engine is Warren Spector's Shooter
Dallas, TX, February 10, 1998 -- ION Storm today announced
the company has licensed Epic MegaGames' UnrealTM
computer game engine. ION Storm is using the
engine for Lead Designer Warren Spector's
upcoming 3D role-playing espionage game, Shooter
(working title). Shooter is ION Storm's fifth
title in development and will be released at
retail in late 1998 by Eidos Interactive (NASDAQ:
EIDSY). ION Storm is in negotiations with Epic to
use the engine for future games.
"ION Storm's partnership with Epic MegaGames embodies our
strategy of utilizing the industry's top
technologies," said Bob Wright, Chief
Operating Officer of ION Storm. "We are
committed to creating immersive, revolutionary
games with outstanding design and gameplay; and
relationships, such as ours with Epic, are the
means to attaining this goal."
The Unreal engine
allows developers to create vast worlds with true
3D environments and dynamic lighting effects, and
features a powerful scripting language that
enables programmers to control and customize all
aspects of the game's environments and
characters. Taking advantage of Intel's MMX
technology, the engine provides breakneck
gameplay, high-resolution graphics, CD-quality
audio and multiplayer options. The engine is
designed for the Windows 95/NT platforms and
Intel Pentium processor-based computers.
"Epic built Unreal to provide developers with the most
powerful 3D engine," said Tim Sweeney, owner
of Epic MegaGames and lead programmer for Unreal.
"We know ION Storm's team of design
visionaries will push the Unreal engine to the
extreme and we can't wait to play Warren's
game."
"Ever since I
saw the first screenshots of the Unreal game a
few years ago, I was blown away," said
Warren Spector. "This engine offers us
tremendously expandable code, incredible 3D
world-building tools and unsurpassed editing
capabilities, and I am psyched to design my game
around it."
ION Storm is building its games upon the industry's leading
technologies. The company is using id Software's
acclaimed QUAKE II engine for upcoming games
Daikatana and Anachronox, and AnimaTek's voxel
technology for Doppelganger.
