Dual Processor FAQ'

Q...I'm wondering if there is any way of running a dedicated server on ONE of my processors? I have a BP6 motherboard with two 550Mhz and I thought it would be a great way around Unreal's lacking support for smp?
I've read somewhere about someone doing it, but they never told me how. I'm thinking it can't be done (binding it to one
processor that is...)

A...Activate the NT Task-Manager, locate the UCC.EXE or Unreal.exe
under the"Processes View" tag, right-click on the process, select "Set Affinity", and choose which CPU the process is to use.

I run two servers on a similar machine (ABIT BP6/CEL 500@562), and I assign each server to a seperate CPU.  This way, the two servers don't interfere  with each other.

Q...Any Ideas on how performance is when you run Unreal under NT and you do not specify just one processor?

A...The performance difference is negligible between binding to one processor or binding to either. Binding to a single processor for the client is probably of a little more benefit than the server because keeping the processor cache full is reasonably important for the client's rendering pipeline.

Q...Is EPIC planning on SMP support for Unreal. All my servers have dual Processor's ranging from 400Mhz to 600Mhz. We have been thinking of removing one processor from each server and building another to maximize the servers. Any ideas!!!

A...We're not planning on SMP support for Unreal. Q3A's SMP support is only for the rendering pipeline and it's my understanding that it doesn't make use of the second processor when running a dedicated server either.

Just run two servers on the same machine.

Further Comments:
Oh yeah! SOBServers runs two Dual CPU machines, both running 2 Unreal servers. With more processing power, like dual P3-600s, you can run THREE Unreal servers, 16 peeps each, without hitting more than 80-90% usage. NT balances CPU usage VERY well, swapping processes between processors as it needs... I'd recomend NOT setting the affinity for either server to just one CPU, as this seems to actually hinder NT's ability to deal with everything...

Q...I'm running two Unreal servers on an NT 4.0 dual PII-450 with 256RAM. The servers are both run from the command line and run just fine, but the DOS windows stay open. Is there any way or utility to throw these in the toolbox or run ucc as a service?

A...[awaiting answer]
